Birthday!
Abby turned 12 this week! A family from church made her an awesome mickey mouse sugar free chocolate mousse cake with an almond flour cake bottom and sugar free chocolate ganache! So delicious! Through Abby's diagnosis, surgery and radiation the hardest thing for her has been the low carb sugar free diet! A birthday makes it extra hard but a cake like this makes it all OK!
We figured it was time for an update! Abby is doing well and has not been as fatigued as she was but then she got a bad cold that knocked her out again. She is still having difficulty sleeping which leads to more fatigue. She is still having to come home early from school each day and we are doing well with the science distance learning. Abby is very studious so that makes it easier on me! She is always wanting to keep up on her classes. Last entry we told you that Abby was chosen to participate in the speech competition and she did great. Tied for third place!
We are still waiting for a sleep study but have received a referal from Abby's cognitive psychologist for a great doctor. Abby and I went back up to get the results from her cognitive testing and it was very interesting. The doctor told Abby a lot about how her brain works and told her that from the tests she could tell that she is a smart, hard working, resilient child. (I could have told her that without the 6 hrs of testing!!) This was her baseline testing so we expected everything to be good and it was. They will test her every year to see what effects there are from the radiation treatment. We learned that Abby has difficulty learning visually. This means subjects that are taught mostly through visual examples (like math) will be more difficult for her to process. Her good work ethic and hard work make up the difference and she does the extra work needed to learn the content. The doctor will be contacting the school to set up some strategies and support to help!
Abby's next MRI is not till the end of May and we have no more specialty appointments this month! Yay! Her oncology outpatient clinic is scheduled for June 7 so we will be sure to post any news we receive then. Hopefully we see some change for the better!
